![]() On Your Wings Naked As We Came Cinder And Smoke Sunset Soon Forgotten Teeth In The Grass Love And Some Verses Radio War Each Coming Night Free Until They Cut Me Down Fever Dream Sodom, South Georgia Passing Afternoon Iron & Wine is essentially one person: Sam Beam, with a soft acoustic folk, almost country, style. Every song on this CD is acoustic and features his amazing whispery vocals. Although the songs deal mainly with loss, he keeps a rather upbeat attitude in his guitar work as well as his voice: you can almost picture smiling lips speaking the words. The lyrics seem very religiously based; there are a lot of references to God, etc. but upon further reading he has said he's Agnostic. The lyrics are very good, they retain a simpleness about them and there are definitely words and metaphors in them that let you know he's southern (he's from the Miami area) but he does escape the "country" genre. He never makes it quite clear what he means in any of his songs; there's a lot of interpretation. Some of the lyrics are just plain strange, from the cremation references in "Naked as we Came" to the line "All dead white boys say, 'God is good'" in "Sodom, South Georgia." The only real drawback to this record is the consistency of the style (although the style is good) makes it hard to distinguish between songs. It's good for when you want to just chill out or maybe even fall asleep, but there's no stand out songs or anything; it's definitely a "whole-album" type of listen. Rating: 4/5 |
