Power Chords

Fifths:
In rock music, instead of full chords, abbreviated versions just using the root and fifth note are often played. These 'fifth chords' are commonly known as 'power chords.' Apart from the tone, one of the main advantages of using fifths is that it's much easier to move quickly from chord to chord because there are only a couple of fingers involved. To play a fifth power chord, simply fret a note on an bass string and add a note two frets up on the adjacent higher string.

Songs that use fifths are normally in minor keys, so learn a minor scale in fifths as this will prepare you for the type of progressions commonly used.

To hear the differences in sound between fifths and standard chord shapes, play through the following short chord sequence, first using normal open position chords and then with the chords as fifths. Once you've done this, you could experiment by converting songs that you already play with open chords into a version using fifths.

To make sure the power chords are played clearly you need to do the following:
-Adapt your hand stretch to the size of the gret at which you're playing.
-Move your whole hand when you have fret position.
-Only strum the strings you are fretting; beware of hitting unwanted open strings.

-blake
