Which Practice Amp to Buy: Well, I made a thread like this in temp UG. But it got deleted. So, I'm redoing it with a more detailed approach. Line 6 Spyder Series: A digital amp that aims for the metal/hardcore crowd, but fails miserably. This is a very lifeless amp that is hard to get a decent sound out of. The clean channel is too cold and sterile to have a good clean tone. The distortion channel has the sane problem. It lacks enough gain to get into higher metal. Maybe the onboard effects could save this amp, right? No, this is the worst part of the amp. The effects are much too difficult to figure out how to get a good tone. It always sounds like theres some weird spacey reverb constantly on all the time. This amp can however get some decent tone with a lot of adjusting. Only problem is that the smae settings seem to change the next day. Not worth the trouble, and the only style it can do any good is Nu-Metal. Final rating: 6/10 Marshall MG CD/DFX Series: Pretty much the worst practice amp you can buy. You may get caught up in the fact that you can now get a practice amp from the company that revolutionized amps. You'll see the beautiful black casing and the golden writing that says "Marshall". Do yourself a favor, run away from this amp. There's so many areas to talk about, but I'll start with the cleans. The cleans are horribely muddy and way too bassy for my liking. Not a tight-end bass sound, but a essy sloppy bass. As bad as the cleans are,the Overdrive channel is 10X worse. It's once again, horribely messy, and there is much left too be desired in the gain department. Operating this channel without a noisegate will make your ears bleed from all the stray noise. The effects are disgusting as well. The only one of them that is useable is the Reverb. It's sad when the bad effects are the saving-point of an amp. Final Rating: 4/10 Roland Cube Series: Finally, A great high-gain,low budget amp for the metalhead. The distorion channel is amazing. It can handle all types of metal easily. It can do other styles good as well. The clean channel is good, but it's nothing special. Meant only to get you by. The effects on this amp are pretty solid as well. Not intended to do anything besides metal, but it doesn't mean that it can't. Best buy for the budding metalhead. Final Rating: 8/10 Vox Valvetronix: The Rolls Royce of the practice amps. This amp can take anything that you can play and make it sound amazing. It handles all styles well, even metal. It can't do much past Metallica/Megadeth styles stuff, without a distortion pedal. The effects and amp simulators on this amp are mind-boggling. The lower end models do have some input problems, and the speakers aren't the best in the world. The cleans on this amp are very good, and rival many more expensive amps. The best amp for anybody but a complete diehard metal fan. Final Rating: 9/10 |
