The Repudiated Immortals I’m starting with The Sunlandic Twins because it is my least favorite of Montreal album. Well, at least my least favorite electro one. But if I started with my favorite I’d have nothing to work my way up to. That said, I really like The Sunlandic Twins! One of my favorite things about of Montreal is that no two albums have a similar sound. Satanic Panic in the Attic is when the band escaped its lo-fi days, but The Sunlandic Twins is where they truly discovered their new electro-ish sound, though it did not become refined till later. As a whole, The Sunlandic Twins is very chill and relaxed compared to other of Montreal records. The songs aren’t structured as unconventionally as with other albums, either. Most songs have choruses and verses, but song length seems to be a real issue here. It seems as if “Requiem for O.M.M.2.” ends before it has a chance to begin, which is a real shame because it’s on of the best on the whole album. The same also applies to the last track, “The Repudiated Immortals”. But when the songs aren’t too short, they’re far too long. As much as I love “Wraith Pinned to the Mist and Other Games”, I probably heard “let’s pretend we’re in Antarctica over a million times by the amount of times I played this album. Trust me, it’s a bitch to get stuck in your head. Taking it a bit further is “The Party’s Crashing Us” just drags on entirely too long, despite being an awesome song. Then there’s little tracks that should hardly be classified as songs thrown in there (“Our Springtime is Sweet Not Fleeting”, “Knight Rider”). Sure, they add some flow to the album, but once I get to “October is Eternal” I start to think that the only purpose of these jams is to make the album push the 40 minute mark so Kevin Barnes could sleep at night. But enough bitching, let’s focus on the good stuff. All the songs have this awesome happy electro feel, which really stands out to me in “Forecast Fascist Future” and “I Was Never Young”. “So Begins Our Alabee” definitely proves that of Montreal is at their best when they keep it upbeat, especially compared to “Death of a Shade of a Hue” which makes me wish that the aforementioned color hadn’t died at times. I’ll admit, it’s a pretty chill song and Kevin’s moaning is cool, but it along with “I Was a Landscape in Your Dream” don’t compare to other of Montreal songs. Then there’s the one song that stands out, and is quite outstanding… “Oslo in the Summertime” begins with some creepy voices then you hear the awesome guitar part come in. it’s very chill, almost eerie as Kevin Barnes sings the “ba-ba-ba-ba” along with the electro sounds, quite an excellent song. The Sunlandic Twins ends with “The Repudiated Immortals”, but, though an excellent song, it doesn’t seem like a sufficient ending, again especially with the songs short length. I must admit, I had to look hard to find things to criticize. The main problem with this album is its filler tracks and its boring spots. The other songs on it are excellent and if this was of Montreal’s only album it would probably be one of my favorite albums. But alas, Satanic Panic in the Attic and Hissing Fauna, Are You the Destroyer? do exist, and the tracks from The Sunlandic Twins just seem like the under achieving lovechild of the songs from the two. But again, compared to other electro-indie, it’s grade A material. 4.5/5. EDIT: fuck this review I realized I did it all wrong. I was trying too hard to be critical. I'll do a new one later.
