I really love this band, and you should too! They are quite possibly the best indie rock group of all time. Definitely one of the best, at the very least. Must-listens for anyone who enjoys the Pixies, Dinosaur Jr., Modest Mouse, or early Death Cab for Cutie. There's Nothing Wrong With Love and Keep it Like a Secret are both fantastic entries in the indie canon, but the TRUE masterpiece is 1997's Perfect From Now On. One of the best albums I've heard in the entire genre. Such a textural mixture of indie rock and post-rock elements reminiscent of Slint's classic Spiderland. The climaxes on those songs are just awe-inspiring, like on "Kicked It In The Sun" (the build-up is just intense). All the songs are just about perfect, can't give it a single fault. Every moment is... a tender moment. Highly recommend it. More than that, really. The band is STILL good, too. Even in 2006, they're still putting out class work like You in Reverse. I plead you to give them a listen. |

I listened to Built the Spill. I like them a lot, I've heard a lot of hype around them but never got around to listening. I'll get an album when I'm home. |

Perfect from Now On is a good album, I think you overhyped it a bit, Brennan, but a good album nonetheless. Like the Dino Jr. with less distortion and less guitar talent but more vocal talent. XD Though I still don't see your comparisons to Death Cab besides the fact that the vocals sound a little similar.

So Built to Spill is just great. It took me a really long time to enjoy Perfect From Now On but I rather like it now. Except seriously, they need to write more concise songs, they just go ON AND ON and it works most of the time but it bothers me after a while. I guess I just can't appreciate nice things. But I'm pretty sure There's Nothing Wrong With Love is better, or at least I like it more because the songs are better lyrically, don't go on forever, and it's rather emotive! Listen to that Morgan, you will understand the Death Cab for Cutie comparisons. Keep it Like a Secret doesn't really leave a lasting impression on me, and this is because I either smoke too much or there's nothing about it really that they haven't done on earlier albums, but that isn't to say it isn't a good album. |
