The head of Burzum, the one-man Norwegian black metal project, known as Varg Vikernes is known for many, many things. We remember him for being one of the most seriously insane people in the world today; from the burning of the Fantoft Stave Church (which he used the charred remains of as the cover art for his 1993 EP Aske) to the murder of fellow nutcase, black metal artist, and former Mayhem guitarist Øystein "Euronymous" Aarseth (though all 23 stab wounds in the back were made in self-defense, according to him), there just seems to be no end in the horrific acts this little Nazi has pulled off (and he gets out of prison next month, April 2008!). What also should be remembered about Varg, is that he has made some of the greatest music to ever be conceived. Hvis Lyset Tar Oss was released in 1994 and the black metal genre hasn't been able to catch up to it since.

Varg may be one evil, misanthropic dude but his ability to produce atmosphere is unparalleled. He needs that talent too, because when it comes to overall musicianship he is horribly incompetent. To make up for this, he paints us a portrait of pure morbid despair as he opens the album up with the song "Det som en gang var" which sinks into your soul with unsettling ambiance, giving you a mere preview of the hurt, violence, and pain that is about to be exposed to you. Eventually, the main riff creeps in and the journey through the psychotic mind of Varg Vikernes truly begins. No matter how sloppily played this riff is, it's still brimming with passionate, sickening hate and is one of the most wicked riffs ever written. The guitar is accompanied perfectly by the fierce, pounding beat of the drums and the melancholy synthesizer and it all flows like a dream while Varg coughs up blood screams. The song is intense, it feels alive, and it consists of about three chords played repeatedly for 14 minutes. Every note is perfect and creates a landscape of gloom magnificently and one cannot stress the brilliance of "Det som en gang var," it is just simply the greatest piece of metal ever conceived. Countless black metal bands have tried to mimic the living, breathing beast of despair this song summons but every single one has failed.

If "Det som en gang var" is the summoning of the beast, then the following two tracks are the release of the hulking creature onto mankind. It is an excellent continuation from the first song, even if it is naturally weaker. The second track admittedly would've worked better as a four minute interlude rather than an eight minute piece, but there is nothing wrong with this for we find another evil riff displayed for us. “Inn i slottet fra drømmen” is better than the title track at least, even if only consists mainly of a one-note guitar riff. The ending is the big kicker here, for it ends in a spiraling cascade of anguished screaming and insane tremolo-picked riffage. I don't know how anyone could possibly create an album of this kind without it sounding boringly repetitive, but Varg accomplishes this by sacrificing his whole, twisted soul into the vinyl record.

This is when we meet the last track, the closing ambient epic dubbed "Tomhet," where the beast awoken by the first track is laid to rest once more. Burzum's ambient pieces have always been a subject of constant debate with fans and understandably so. Two keyboard notes pretty much played ad nausem isn't for everyone (but black metal itself isn't for everyone to begin with). This song is obviously made not only to put to rest the beast of despair but to lull the listener to sleep (an idea further expanded upon by this album's follow-up, 1996's Filosofem, Varg's other masterpiece). This ambient masterwork is still compelling, something even Brian Eno would be jealous of, and halfway through the keyboard tone changes to sound like a flute and a drum beat enters the saddening mix. "Tomhet" is the aftermath of the beast's rampage, his thirst for blood quenched, and he drifts to sleep among the rotting remains of those it's ravaged. That is Hvis Lyset Tar Oss, a monster formed from pure hatred, and it couldn't be any more perfect.
